Manchester United are keeping a close watch on Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde, with the 22-year-old’s lack of playing time potentially reopening the door to a January transfer.

Balde has made only 12 minutes of LaLiga football this season, according to Mundo Deportivo, with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick increasingly turning to Xavi Espart and João Cancelo at left-back.

That dramatic reduction in playing time has placed Balde’s future under renewed scrutiny, and Manchester United are reportedly paying close attention.

The Spanish defender was already on United’s radar during the summer transfer window. Fabrizio Romano reported in August that United had contacted Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, to establish the conditions of a potential deal.

Romano said United were “looking for a left-back” and had contacted Mendes to understand the terms surrounding Balde.

Mundo Deportivo reported that the upcoming January window could become decisive if his playing time does not improve.

The report also quoted Jorge Mendes as saying Balde “will be fine in the future.”

Romano explained:

Despite United’s interest, Balde’s own position remains central to the story.

Romano has repeatedly stated that the defender wants to remain at Barcelona and fight for his place.

That does not completely close the door.

Romano previously described the situation as a “50/50 situation”, explaining that Balde could still leave if Barcelona received a sufficiently attractive proposal.
