Youth Humanitarian & Community Leader | Founder & President, Botswana Youth Ahead Organization | Sustainable Development Advocate

Keabetswe Alex Sanao is a Botswana youth leader, social innovator and advocate for sustainable development whose work brings together youth empowerment, community service, civic participation, education and grassroots development.

He is the Founder and President of Botswana Youth Ahead Organization (BOYAO), a youth-led organisation established in 2022 with a focus on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals and creating opportunities for young people to participate actively in community and national development. Through BOYAO, Sanao has been involved in initiatives spanning youth leadership, education, civic engagement, agripreneurship, climate action, health and wellness, justice and economic empowerment.

His leadership extends into education and youth development. Through the All Brilliant Minds Club, which operates across primary, junior secondary and senior secondary schools, he promotes leadership development, academic motivation, career guidance and a growth mindset among learners. He also founded the Boammaaruri Inspirational Movement, a tertiary-level youth platform focused on leadership, public speaking, entrepreneurship, employability, SDG literacy and civic participation.

Sanao’s community work has included direct volunteer service. In July 2026, he joined members of BOYAO in supporting the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture with the construction of a Foot-and-Mouth Disease prevention fence at Tsoaneng-Sekhutlhane. Earlier in 2026, he led BOYAO volunteers at SOS Children’s Villages in Tlokweng, where they assisted with painting children’s houses. He also volunteered approximately eight and a half hours cleaning the National Stadium in preparation for the Debswana World Athletics Relays 2026.

At grassroots level, Sanao serves as a Volunteer Youth Focal Person at the Goodhope-Mmathethe Constituency Parliament Office, where he mobilises young people, participates in kgotla meetings, conducts youth empowerment activities and engages young people on issues affecting their communities. He also serves as a Southern Region Representative within the Botswana Youth Cooperatives Alliance, including leading a team of 10 young people from Hatshe Lentle Multi-purpose Cooperative to a Cooperative 101 workshop in August 2026.

Education remains another significant part of his youth development work. Through BOYAO and his involvement with the Botswana School of Business Sciences, formerly Botswana Accountancy College, Sanao has participated in school outreach, learner motivation and donation initiatives involving institutions including Lobatse Senior Secondary School, Digawana Primary School, Lorwana Primary School, Sir Seretse Khama Junior School, Naledi Senior Secondary School and Molepolole Sebele 1 Primary School.

His advocacy also extends to community wellbeing. Through a partnership between BOYAO and Breaking the Ice Network, he contributed to the Monna-Tia Wa Bua Campaign, which promotes open conversations around men’s mental health and wellbeing. He has also participated in men’s mental health tournaments and used public platforms, including Duma FM and International Men’s Day activities at Old Naledi Kgotla, to contribute to the conversation.

Sanao has increasingly participated in national civic and policy conversations. His documented engagements include constitutional court discussions, the National Youth Policy Debate at Parliament, the Youth Consultation on the National Human Resource Development Strategy, the 2026 Youth Budget Pitso, civil society budget analysis and stakeholder meetings focused on youth participation in policy and civic engagement.

Sustainable development is central to his leadership. He is the Convenor of the Botswana Youth SDGs Summit 2026, a youth-led platform intended to facilitate dialogue on the Sustainable Development Goals, strengthen partnerships and contribute to Botswana’s sustainable development agenda. He also participates in the Botswana Youth Climate Council, youth dialogues on sustainable development, the Gaborone Urban Greening Forum and the Africa’s Biodiversity Summit.

Technology and innovation form another dimension of his work. In February 2026, Sanao organised a Chatbot Development Workshop in partnership with KMS and Vanguard AI at the Botswana School of Business Sciences, introducing young people to emerging technology and digital innovation. He also served as a panelist at the Botswana Leadership Forum 2026 at the University of Botswana.

Beyond Botswana, Sanao has participated in international youth platforms. The portfolio identifies his involvement with the KABILUN Africa Think Tank, the SAT Botswana Youth Hub and other international youth engagements. It also records recognition from the United Nations ECOSOC Youth Forum, which invited him to attend the 2025 forum following recognition of his efforts toward building sustainable communities.

Academically, Sanao studies International Finance and Banking at Botswana Accountancy College and has completed more than 40 trainings and short courses covering areas including leadership, governance, health, sustainable development, human rights, climate, finance and theology.

For Sanao, youth leadership is demonstrated not only through organisational titles but through participation and service.
